Rob Filkin for
Business Person of the Year - 2011

The Brampton Board of Trade is proud to announce that Robert Filkin is the 2011 Business Person of the Year.

Rob is a partner in the Brampton law firm of McCabe, Filkin, Garvie &Hein LLP in Brampton.

"Rob has been a tremendous asset to our community, both as a leader in business and as a significant contributor to our city's quality of life. It's an honour for the Board of Trade to be able to recognize someone who has done so much," says Jim Schembri, Chair of the BBOT Board of Directors.

"I am honoured and flattered to be chosen. It's humbling considering all the great business leaders who have been recognized over the years. I am truly appreciative of this prestigious honour."

Prior to forming the firm in 1987, Rob was a partner at Lawrence, Lawrence, Stevenson LLP. He has practised mainly in the areas of corporate, commercial and administrative law for more than 30 years.

He has also served as a Judge of the Small Claims Court for 18 years. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree, Juris Doctor degree and the degree Barrister-at-law. In addition, he holds certificates in mediation and alternative dispute resolution. He served on the board of directors of the Peel Law Association for nine years and is a past president of the organization. He is a former member of the Regional Courts Management Advisory Committee and currently chairs the Ontario Superior Court Bench and Bar Committee for Peel Region.

In community involvement, he has served on the boards of directors of no less than 12 community organizations, fulfilling many roles including president, treasurer, fundraiser, and committee chair. He is currently Chair of Sheridan's Board of Governors, a director and Vice President of the Wellspring Chinguacousy Foundation, a director and Treasurer of the Brampton Arts Council, Co-Chair of the HACE Roundtable for the City of Brampton, a director and Past President of the Brampton Safe City Association.

He is a former member of the Brampton Rotary Club, during which time he chaired their Easter Seals Campaign, a former member of the Peel Memorial Hospital Community Advisory Committee, and a former director of the Chinguacousy Health Services Centre and Chinguacousy Health Services Foundation. He was a member of the City of Brampton Governance Restructuring Committee and has chaired the City of Brampton Council Compensation Committee for the last two terms of Council. Rob was the Chair of the 9th Bramalea Scout Group for eleven years and was formerly a director of the Brampton Symphony Orchestra. Rob has received numerous volunteer recognition awards from the City of Brampton and in 2008 was named Brampton's Citizen of the Year.

Rob believes it is important to give back to the community. "It started that I just wanted to give back and I have learned over the years that all of these groups have good causes." Of all the projects in which he has been involved, he cites the building of the new Wellspring Cancer Support Centre as most significant. He got involved because he was asked, and he had a personal connection to it.

Rob is the father of two adult children.
